The loading test is carried out by measuring strain, deflection, sag and displacement in bridge girders and other structural parts, using a known truck weight as a load. Using the measurement results along with the bridge's computational model, the result will be a reliable view of the bridge's load bearing capacity.
The loading test made within one working day includes static and dynamic load stages in accordance with the bridge-specific plan. The test load vehicle may be, for example, a full trailer truck loaded with gravel or timber or, if necessary, a vehicle crane or tray truck, whose load is changed in stages.
In the period 2012 - 2017 Dimense Ltd has completed about 70 bridge loading tests in cooperation with the partners (Ponvia Oy, SWECO Rakennetekniikka Oy, Ramboll Finland Oy, SITO Oy, Pöyry Oy, VR Track Oy) for the Finnish Transport Agency and the ELY Centres.
The loading test can also be made for railway bridges by using normal railway transport as load, eg. heavy freight trains.
